Local SEO Schema: Describe the Business, Not a Fictional One

A practical guide to accurate Organization, Service, Breadcrumb and LocalBusiness structured data.

Structured data helps machines understand a page's entities and relationships, but it cannot turn an unsupported claim into a real office, review or award. Local SEO markup should reflect content visitors can verify and match the company's operational reality. More schema types do not automatically mean more ranking benefit.

Start with the main organization

Use a stable brand name, legal name where confirmed, canonical website, authentic contact points and actual social profiles. Add the real address only when appropriate and verified. A national service provider without walk-in premises should not pretend to have staffed branches in every market.

Mark up page purpose

Commercial service pages can use Service markup, informational articles Article, and navigational hierarchies BreadcrumbList. Use consistent entity identifiers where possible. Keep titles and descriptions aligned with visible page content, and avoid stuffing every schema property with keywords.

Be cautious with ratings and results

Do not add Review or AggregateRating solely because the business likes five-star presentation. Google has specific rich-result rules, including restrictions on self-serving review markup. Invented ratings, authors, dates or business locations can mislead both users and parsers.

Validate and monitor

Run Schema.org validation and Google's Rich Results Test for supported features. Separate 'syntactically valid schema' from 'eligible for a Google rich result.' Watch Search Console enhancements and fix critical errors instead of adding markup without a measurable purpose.

PRACTICAL CHECKLIST

What to do next

  • Use truthful entity names and locations
  • Choose types matching actual page intent
  • Avoid invented ratings and social profiles
  • Validate structured data after deploy

One mistake to avoid

A large JSON-LD graph containing made-up branches or unsupported awards is worse than a small accurate graph.

How to measure progress

Check structured-data validity, Search Console warnings and clarity of canonical entity references; do not claim guaranteed rankings.

Use actual customer feedback and search-console evidence to improve the page over time. Market conditions, business eligibility, operating capacity and intake quality all influence outcomes; no search tactic guarantees a position or lead volume.
